Allen Community College volleyball fans did not get long to make a first impression of the Red Devils after they swept the Friends University Junior Varsity Falcons in their exhibition home opener.

The Allen Community College Red Devil volleyball team made a strong first impression during Wednesday?s exhibition home opener.

Following a strong performance at last week?s tournament in Illinois, the Red Devils kept their momentum going with a sweep of Friends University?s JV.

?We just keep focusing, getting better, finding things to work on and not being satisfied with what we?re doing,? Allen coach Maria Aikins said. ?It was a three-win sweep, but there are definitely some things we need to clean up to get prepared for this weekend.?

The Red Devils did not give their home crowd a lot of time to take in the first home match of the season. Allen made quick work of the Friends Falcons with a 25-13, 25- and 25-17 sweep. The match was a team effort. Six girls tied for the team lead in kills with six apiece.

One player setting herself apart was sophomore libero Audrey Peek, who tallied 20 digs on defense. Another defensive standout was Grace Curl with two blocks.

?It?s going well for us. We?re really freshman heavy but that?s not stopping us,? Peek said. ?We have things to clean up but at the same time we?re pushing ourselves. We picked up right where we left off last year and we?ve continued to grow.?

Allen will spend Friday and Saturday on the road at the Jimmy Johns Invitational in Iowa. They open the tournament Friday against Spoon River, followed by a match against host team Southeastern Community College of Iowa. Saturday, they open the day against Frontier Community College, then wrap up with a game against John Wood Community College.

The Jayhawk Conference season begins Sept. 3 with Kansas City Kansas Community College coming to town.

?That will be a big one, especially with KCKCC getting fourth at nationals,? Aikins said. ?We were right there with them last year. It was 6 points total, and the loss made a big difference for us. This is going to be a big one for us.?
